AnkiExAnkiEx Features
Everything you need to capture knowledge in seconds, personalize cards to your decks, and keep studying uninterrupted.
Main Features
AI Button
Toggle the AI button in the overlay. When it’s on, AnkiEx drafts question and answer fields. When it’s off, the text you highlighted is simply copied into the Question box so you can finish the card manually.
Cmd+Option+A Shortcut
Highlight text anywhere on macOS (browser, PDF, Word, email, etc.) and press Cmd+Option+A. The overlay opens with the captured text and your last-used deck selected.
Deck Picker
Choose the deck at the top of the overlay before sending a card. Decks carry their own prompts, language settings, and card type preferences.
Regenerate & Reverse
Click “Regenerate” to ask AI for a new draft. Use “Reverse” when a flashcard works in both directions—e.g., definition → term versus term → definition—to flip the fields instantly.
Send to Anki
Press Cmd+Enter or click “Create Card” to push the card to Anki through AnkiConnect—no manual copy/paste required.
Card Type Shortcuts
Use keyboard shortcuts to switch modes instantly: Control+B (Basic), Control+R (Basic & reversed), Control+C (Cloze), Control+I (Image Occlusion), Control+V (Vocabulary), Control+G (Grammar).
Card Types & Requirements
AnkiEx supports multiple card flows. Each group below lists when the card type is available and how to trigger it.
Normal Cards (available in every deck)
Basic & Basic (reversed)
Press Cmd+Option+A to capture text, edit the Question/Answer fields, then press Cmd+Enter to save. Tap “Reverse” when you want the card to ask for the opposite side—for example, definition → term and term → definition.
Cloze
Switch to Cloze, highlight the sentence portion to hide, and wrap it with {{c1::...}} or let AI suggest the blank. Ideal for drilling key phrases inside longer passages.
Image Occlusion (requires add-on)
Install the “Image Occlusion Enhanced” add-on (code 1374772155) in Anki to enable this card type.
Image Occlusion
Drop your diagram into the Image tab. AnkiEx scans the labels and draws boxes automatically so you can quiz each part. Requires the “Image Occlusion Enhanced” add-on (code 1374772155) installed in Anki.
Language Cards (require deck language)
Set a language for the deck in Settings → Deck configuration to unlock Vocabulary and Grammar workflows.
Vocabulary
Select Vocabulary and ensure the deck has a language set in Settings → Deck configuration. AnkiEx fetches IPA, pronunciation audio, and suggested images automatically. Tab to the Photo box to open the image browser and drag in the picture you want.
For Mandarin or Japanese decks, click the character icon on a Vocabulary card to generate an additional note that quizzes stroke order using the generated characters.
Grammar
Choose Form, Order, or Choice, highlight a full sentence, and press Cmd+Option+A. Once the overlay opens, select the word or phrase you want to study and press Tab to generate the question. Form shows the base form so you can conjugate or decline it; Order removes the term and tests where it belongs; Choice hides the term entirely and asks for the correct replacement.
Settings Highlights
Fine-tune how AnkiEx behaves for each deck. Toggle AI, customize templates, and check hotkey status without leaving the app.
Deck Configuration
Open Settings → Deck configuration to set the language for Vocabulary cards, adjust AI prompts, and decide whether to include recent cards as context.
Recent Cards Context
Enable “Use recent cards” so AnkiEx references your latest notes when drafting new ones, keeping tone and formatting consistent.
